African Progress Report to Tackle Africa’s Agricultural Sector

The African Progress Panel is set to release its latest report on Africa unleashing green and blue revolutions in agriculture and fishing. The report, which will be launched at this year’s World Economic Forum on Africa in Abuja, Nigeria, was written by the African Progress Panel (APP), a ten member organization, chaired by the United Nation’s former Secretary-General Kofi Annan, which advocates shared responsibility for African leaders and their international partners to promote equitable and sustainable development for Africa.
According to the APP, the African Progress report (APR) will take a hard look at the risks and opportunities facing Africa. It will focus on what governments across the region should do in order to convert a decade of growth into transformative development. Agriculture will be the main focus of the report and it will explore ways of channeling much needed capital to the millions of entrepreneurs that have viable business ideas in sectors such as farming, coastal fishing, aquaculture and agro-processing.
Furthermore, APP stated, “This year’s APR reflects on how Africa can address the largely unmet demand for investment in agriculture and fisheries. The report argues that Africa needs to urgently push through sustainable “Green” and “Blue” revolutions fueled by homegrown innovations and informed by lessons from other regions.” The report will also recommend related policies to scale up Africa’s infrastructure and extend its financial services, as well as outline the urgent need to stop the illegal trade of Africa’s timber and fisheries.
