In 2005, Andile Ngcaba made headlines with a US$1 billion stake in Telkom. Today, he runs a fund exceeding US$600 million spanning Africa, Southeast Asia, and Europe – shaping the continent’s digital future.

From Resistance to Revolution

Born in Duncan Village, South Africa, Andile grew up under apartheid. His father ran the local post office, where young Andile watched technicians repair phone lines, sparking his love for technology.

While others played with toys, he rewired broken radios – an early glimpse of his future.

He trained as one of just five Black technicians at Philips Lighting in the 1970s, but his ambitions stretched beyond circuits. He joined the ANC’s underground, fleeing to Angola when repression escalated.

As head of telecommunications for uMkhonto weSizwe, ANC’s military wing, he mastered military comms, radar, and satellite tech—keeping fighters connected in wartime.

Breaking South Africa’s Digital Barriers

When Mandela walked free in 1990, Andile returned from exile to lead the ANC’s Information Systems Department. After South Africa’s first democratic elections in 1994, he became Director General of Communications, transforming a segregated telecom landscape by:

  • Rewriting outdated ICT laws.
  • Licensing community broadcasters.
  • Opening telecom markets to competition.

In 2003, he moved to the private sector, co-leading a US$1 billion acquisition of Telkom. Critics called it a cash grab – he saw it as digital empowerment.

Building Africa’s Digital Backbone

In 2006, he launched Convergence Partners, a private equity fund exceeding US$300 million dedicated to digital sovereignty. His investments reshaped Africa’s tech infrastructure, including:

  • Africa’s first private undersea fiber-optic cable (2007).
  • The first private African satellite (2008).
  • Over thirty investments, including 4Di Capital, Vodacom and SEACOM.

Beyond investing, Andile advises governments, champions tech sovereignty, and leads Solcoin Foundation, equipping underserved schools with digital tools.
